Jesus' First Step To Compassion

In this sermon Francis focuses in on one small step that seems to preceed the compassionate actions of Jesus, namely that he looked and saw the state people were in.  Seeing the condition of others seems to be a step on the way to compassion and the actions which flow from that.  So why might we not see the needy people around us?  That question is engaged.

 Jesus met people in their need but both exceeded their expressed desires and transformed their realtionship with himself.  This is taken as illustrative of the principle that people come to church out of need but stay to serve and opened up to bring a challenge to consumerist attitudes among Christians who want to remain recipients of grace without growing to become channels of grace.
