Wrestling With God

Recorded on Sunday, July 31, 2011

Francis first traces through the checkered career of Jacob from birth through to the end of his exile when the set Old Testament passage picks up the longest night in his life.  It is a night that begins in fearful prayer, involves preparing for the worst and becomes a wrestling bout with God who wounds him to transform him.  The outcome is grace beyond Jacob's hopes as he is reconciled with his brother Esau.  This is held up as a pattern for how God deals with people, a men in particular, to draw their hearts after him.

The Mustard Seed Parable At The End Of A Painful Week

Recorded on Sunday, July 24, 2011

Francis traces his reflection and preparation to preach on the Parable of the Mustard Seed in a week which ended with the death of a former church member and a shocking terrorist attack in Norway.  The words of the Jesus focus us on mystery of how seeds of faith take hold in the human heart.   Seeds for good plants and seeds for evil plants.  One man is celebrated as an illustration of the fruitfulness of a life lived in the Kingdom of Heaven while another's terrible deeds are considered as the fruit of evil seeds that took hold in his heart.

The Worldview Of Jesus

Recorded on Sunday, July 17, 2011

The parable of the 'Wheat and the weeds' does not really tell us to do anything or not do anything.  It is a picture of how Jesus saw the Kingdom of God at work on earth.  That provides a world view for his followers as we live our Kingdom lives in just that setting.   The text comes with pictures that are essential to the message.
