Christianity celebrates God's outreach to humanity.  Meanwhile humanity has since time began been concerned with where, how and through whom people can meet God.  Under this influence many places on earth have become considered as sacred and certain people deemed essential for people to meet with God and offer aceptable worship.  This was the case in Jesus' day when religion was running strong.  Jesus gave some clear indications that he did not believe this was his Father's desire and often actually represented a distortion of what God intended.
