Matters Of The Heart

Sermon of Sunday, October 18, 2009

Preacher: Francis Noordanus

Scriptures: Mark 10:35-41 with reference to Hebrews 5 1-10

Introduction:

Everyone has a heart, that inner place where we decide from and act out of.  Transforming our hearts is the stuff of discipleship and core business in seeking to embrace the Kingdom of God.  In this sermon I trace one discipleship session described in Mark's Gospel.  James and John act on the ambitions of their hearts creating a discipleship moment as Jesus instructs them, and us, in his way, the way of the servant.

I consider how discipleship involves rooting out hidden orientations and policies in our hearts that need to be brought to the light and either transformed or killed.  By way of conclusion some follow-up exercises of reflection on the heart are offered for ongoing reflection as disciples.
