Love = Obedience

Sermon of Sunday, May 1, 2016

Preacher: Francis Noordanus

Scriptures: John 14:15-24

As there are no sermon notes prepared for this message the audio brings the message.  This begins with a short dramatic incident where Francis commanded someone to come to him. This exercise enabled all those present to appreciate their difficulty with receiving or even seeing commands issued.  This put us in the zone to grapple with the Gospel passge where three times in John 14 Jesus links love of God with obedience of God.

Love of God and the resulting obedience make it possible for the Father to send the Holy Spirit to dwell in people who love and obey.  To enable listeners to enter into this a list of 50 commands of the Lord Jesus are attached for personal and cell group study.  Those who seek to love God will take hold of his commandments and seek to receive the Spirit whom he sends.

However, the rebellious will find simple obedience too difficult and seek to negotiate.  Such avoidance of obedience is often well concealed in religion where the Lord is reduced to a lapdog to be summoned at people's prayerful whim to provide blessings on what ever devotees desire.  This needs to be recognised for what it is.
